Tennessee To Get "No Child Left Behind" Report Today
schools across the
state get the results of the Tennessee Comprehensive Program, given to
younger students, and the Gateway exams, given to high schoolers to
measure whether they make progress from year to year. Districts and
schools face penalties if they fail to show progress under the federal
"No Child Left Behind" education law.
FEMA
Gives Money To Local Rescue Agencies
FEMA has awarded nearly 2-million dollars to Tennessee Fire and Rescue
Agencies as part of a program that supports local fire departments and
emergency medical services. The money can be used for training and
equipment.
First
Lady Stops In Tennessee
First Lady Laura Bush is visiting Tennessee today. Bush is Nashville
to speak at the 5th-annual Reading First Conference at the Gaylord
Opryland Resort. The U-S Department of Education is hosting the event.
Newborns
Hearing Test Requirement
Tennessee is one of 44 states requiring all newborns to undergo a
hearing test, before leaving the hospital...Nearly 12,000 babies with
hearing loss are born annually in the U-S. Federal Health Officials
recommend a hearing check for those in the 1st three months of life.
Babies born outside hospitals in Tennessee are required to be tested
within 48-hours, under a law that took effect July 1st. A spokeswoman
for the state department of health says Tennessee newborns are checked
for 41 separate problems within hours of birth.
IN SPORTS....
Jimmie Johnson scored his 2nd win at the All State 400 at the
Brickyard at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway yesterday. Tire troubles
made Sunday's race a caution- marred debacle.
The Tennessee Titans and all-pro defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth
didn't agree to terms quickly enough for him to be on the field on the
first practice of training camp. But Haynesworth did show up Friday to
sign his tender and should be on the field for the second day of
training camp Saturday.
All of the Tennessee Titans are signed now that the team has agreed to
terms with first-round selection Chris Johnson on a five-year, 12
million-dollar deal. The running back from East Carolina had missed
the first practice of training camp on Friday.
