The state Department of Health
reports a ninth Tennessean has been sickened by the salmonella
outbreak linked to tainted tomatoes.
Officials say a resident of Anderson County became ill but has since
recovered. No tomatoes grown in Tennessee have been linked with the
salmonella outbreak, which has affected more than 11-hundred people in
more than 40 states.
Tennessee is on track to be one of the top three marijuana growing
states this year. The skies over the Volunteer State are busy with
helicopters this summer hunting for marijuana and have already
destroyed more than 400,000 plants. The Governor's Task Force has
3-teams searching for marijuana everyday with the help of the T-B-I,
Highway Patrol, Alcoholic Beverage Commission and the National Guard.
The Salvation Army sells items in the Volunteer State that people
donate to support its drug treatment program helping people get their
lives back on-track. Sales for the year is down nearly a quarter of a
million dollars, so the Salvation Army has cut prices to compete with
other thrift stores. The financial pinch has the charity considering
cutting back on some of the meals they provide.
Tennesseans continue to feel the pain at the pump each time they pull
in to fill up their vehicles. On Wednesday, Triple-A reported the
average price per gallon in Chattanooga and Clarksville at 3-94 - a
penny more in the Tri-Cities and Knoxville. Memphis came in on the low
end of the scale at just 3-89 a gallon while Nashville topped the
list, surpassing the four dollar a gallon mark.
An estimated 1-million Latinos registered to vote in time for the
presidential primaries. The Tennessee Refugee and Immigrants Rights
Coalition is pushing eligible immigrants to register and vote and is
organizing voter registration and non-partisan voter education
sessions, including training volunteers to register others to vote.
The average public library in the Volunteer State is housed in a
building that's far too small for the community it's supposed to
serve, and has far fewer materials in circulation than other libraries
around the country, is understaffed by public librarians and weary
community volunteers. Tennessee ranks almost dead last in the nation
for local spending on public libraries.
