Baptists Crack Down On Sex
Offenders
Some 10,000 sexual predators are now
listed on S-B-C web. The Southern Baptist Convention's Web page lists
the names of pastors both indicted and convicted of sexual abuse among
its database. The listings for finding clergy members at SBC's
MinisterSearch, include a former Cordova pastor charged in October
with rape and sexual battery. Leaders of the Southern Baptist
Convention have condemned sexual predators and urge churches to flush
out molesters using federal background checks.
Smoking Tax Anniversary
It will be a year ago tomorrow when
Tennessee increased it's cigarette tax, making it higher than it's
eight neighboring states. Tennessee officials say 10-months isn't
enough time to measure the health impact of tripling the cigarette
tax, but it has some smokers buying in other states. The state has
also banned smoking in offices, restaurants and other public places.
Plus, limiting smoking to adult-only businesses such as bars or
smoking lounges.
DCS Layoffs, Grants End
The Tennessee Department of
Children's Services is losing probation officers, because of an
unexpected change in federal Medicaid rules. Layoffs of 160 D-C-S
employees is costing the department 73-million dollars. To make up
part of that shortfall, D-C-S is ending 12-million dollars in grants
to courts, community programs and schools that use the money to keep
hundreds of children and teens out of jail and the foster care system.
New Tennessee Laws In Effect Tomorrow
More new laws get Tennessee in
compliance with federal standards...Starting tomorrow, homeless sex
offenders will have to register monthly, and all sex offenders will
have to turn over a D-N-A sample. Offenders will also have to give law
enforcement their on-line identities like e-mail addresses or instant
messaging accounts. Plus, drivers could be charged with reckless
driving, if they ignore road closure signs and drive through flooded
roads. Using the on-line software that scalpers used to buy concert
tickets in bulk on-line will now be illegal. Looking to sell copper or
a catalytic converter? You'll have to be registered with a recycling
center and the sellers will be paid with a check. These changes help
Tennessee comply with federal standards starting tomorrow.
