Rebate Checks

The Internal Revenue Service expects to issue 124-million stimulus checks by the end of the year. The I-R-S says is tracking down about 5-point-2 million Social Security recipients and veterans...who qualify for stimulus rebate checks, but haven't filed to receive them. Such individuals, including retirees and veterans...must file a tax return before October 15th to receive their rebate check.  

Inmate Dies, Executions Still Stalled

The oldest living Tennessee death row inmate died in prison, after serving 30-years on death row. The State Attorney General's Office says scheduled executions remain on-hold pending Tennessee's appeal of a federal  judge's ruling that the Volunteer State's 3-drug method of lethal injection is cruel and unusual punishment. The Department of Correction says the longest current Tennessee death row inmate Donald Strouth has been there since 19-78.

Smoking Ban

Governor Phil Bredesen's original proposal outlawing smoking in all workplaces was watered down to allow lighting up in places like bars. The commissioner of the Department of Health, the Campaign for a Healthy and Responsible Tennessee (CHART) released a statewide poll that says 74-percent support the state's current smoking ban with 58-percent in favor of applying the ban to all indoor workplaces, including bars.

IT WAS THREE YEARS AGO YESTERDAY THAT FREDDIE LOUIS WHITTIEMORE DISAPPEARED. HIS FAMILY SAID TO WBBJ-TV HE LEFT HIS HOME FATHER'S DAY MORNING IN 2005, AND NOBODY KNOWS WHERE HE IS. FAMILY AND AUTHORITIES BELIEVE FOUL PLAY MAY HAVE BEEN A FACTOR. NO EVIDENCE IN HIS DISAPPEARANCE HAS TURNED UP. THE HAYWOOD COUNTY SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT WANTS YOUR CALL IF YOU HAVE INFORMATION ABOUT WHITTIEMORE'S DISAPPEARANCE.

Sharon Wreck; One Driver Fatal
A WRECK IN SHARON LEAVES ONE DEAD. JUST AFTER 9:30 WEDNESDAY NIGHT, ALISA FULLER AND HER CAR CRASHED INTO A TRACTOR TRAILER. THE TRUCK DRIVER HAD NO INJURIES. AUTHORITIES REPORT FULLER WAS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE ROAD, AND WAS NOT WEARING A SEAT BELT.

Martin College A Safe School
RECENT CRIME STATISTICS FROM 2007 SHOW THAT THE UNIVERSITY OF TENNESSEE AT MARTIN RANKS AMONG THE SAFEST COLLEGES IN THE STATE. THE MARTIN SCHOOL RANKED SECOND ON THE STATE'S LIST. MARTIN'S DEPARTMENT OF PUBLIC SAFETY HAS THE BEST CRIME CLEARANCE RATE, WHICH IS HIGHER THAN THE STATE AVERAGE.

Officer Fired For Motorcycle Antics
A JACKSON POLICE OFFICER HAS BEEN FIRED FOLLOWING A TICKET FROM A T-H-P OFFICER FOR TRAFFIC INFRACTIONS. THOMAS DEREK BOWMAN HAS BEEN CHARGED WITH RECKLESS DRIVING AND SPEEDING. HE WAS CAUGHT DRIVING 124 MILES PER HOUR IN A 55 MILE ZONE ON A MOTORCYCLE IN HENDERSON COUNTY.

 

WEATHER WHERE YOU ARE
SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS CONTINUED TO INTENSIFY OVER THE WESTERN PORTIONS THE TRI-STATE THIS MORNING.  SOME OF THE HEAVIER STORMS COULD PRODUCE HALF AN INCH OF RAIN, WHILE OTHER LIGHT SHOWERS IN THE AREA COULD MEASURE A TENTH OF AN INCH.  THE HEAVIEST ACTIVITY AT 10AM WAS NEAR POPLAR BLUFF AND SIKESTON.. SPRINKLES WERE FOUND ELSEWHERE AROUND THE REGION.

TODAY'S HIGH OF 85 MAY MAKE FOR 'MUGGY' CONDITIONS, BUT WILL CONTINUE TO HANG AROUND UNTIL THE PASSAGE OF THE COLD FRONT THIS WEEKEND.  OVERNIGHT LOWS WILL BE IN THE MID 60S TONIGHT.  SATURDAY, A CHANCE FOR SHOWERS AND THUNDERSTORMS WILL PERSIST.  SATURDAY NIGHT, HOWEVER, IS LOOKING BETTER; PARTLY CLOUDY SKIES, AND A LOW IN THE LOWER 60S.  SUNDAY WILL BE OUR LAST CHANGE FOR THUNDERSTORMS UNTIL ABOUT MID-WEEK NEXT WEEK.
