[HISTORICAL SOCIETY UPDATE]
-PRESS RELEASE-
The Dyer County Historical Society held
its regular monthly meeting on Tuesday, June 10th at the Bogota
Community Center in Bogota, Tennessee. There were a large number of members and
guests in attendance. (24) The friends of the Bogota Community Center opened the
museum and their "50's Room" and helped Society members tour each of them. The
amount of work that has gone into creating a "true to the period" malt shop was
evident. That room was complete with black and white tile floor, pink and chrome
tables and chairs, large bar with coordinated stools and even a juke box. The
museum included photos, newspaper articles, and artifacts from the past. There
were cotton plants, cotton picking equipment including a 9' sack and two scales
for weighing the cotton. Pictures, uniforms and trophies from many years of
athletic teams from the Bogota area were on display as were lots of and lots of
school pictures. Bogota has truly done a great job of using the Bogota School
building to collect and maintain their local history. During the meeting, the
group learned that thirteen interviews had been completed in the "We the People
of Tennessee - Stories of Land and Place" project in conjunction with Humanities
Tennessee. Harold Holt, former county trustee and state representative was the
most recent interview to be collected. The board learned that two Saturdays each
month have been set aside for "work days" in the Dyer County Museum located next
to the YMCA at 120b McGaughey Ave. East in Dyersburg. Will Newsome, Bill Cloar,
Marie Walden and Earl Willoughby worked last Saturday, labeling and cataloging
items that have been given or loaned to the Society for display in the museum.
Work has begun to enter data about membership, collections, and artifacts into
our recently purchased software called "Past Perfect" which is designed to
facilitate work in museums. The board passed a resolution recognizing Dustin
Strube for his work in placing the World War II monument on the south lawn of
Veteran's Square in Dyersburg. They awarded him a letter of commendation and a
year's free membership in the Society. Other commendations were given to
Representative Craig Fitzhugh for his assistance with our Community Enhancement
grant, Jere Ozment for his help in the Allen Wright "Flying Tiger" collection
that will be on display in the museum and the Bob Norman family for their
donation of Bob's Indian Artifacts collection. A word of remembrance was given
for Don Timmerman, board member who passed away one year ago this month. Other
work that continues to develop include plans for a performance in the Yates
Auditorium by Ken Teutsch in late September. That event will be the annual
meeting for all Society members in addition to Ken playing Mark Twain on stage.
The society is also working to create maps of historically significant places
and events in Dyer County. The first is one of the schools that were in
existence in 1935. (81) The Society has located an original map that places and
names all the one room school houses that were operating before the levy system
or interstate highways were built. The next meeting of the Dyer County
Historical Society will be on Tuesday, July 8th at 4:30 at the Veteran's Museum
located on the Dyersburg Army Airbase in Halls, Tennessee.
